The Kilgen Pipe Organ Company out of St. Louis, Mo. installed the present
pipe organ in 1954. By the early 1970's, some minor work was needed on
the organ. Norman Greenwood, of Greenwood Organ Company from
Charlotte, North Carolina, was contracted to do the work, since he had been
tuning and maintaining the organ at that time. Mr. Greenwood installed
new blower bellows, main bellows, a swell engine, and a new tremolo.
In early 1981, Mr. Greenwood replaced the stop presets and by that time,
there was a need to enlarge the organ.
David Finch, from Florala, Alabama was contracted
to begin tuning and making the much needed additions. In 1983, Mr.
Finch installed a 2 stop trumpet and windchest. The addition of the 8'
Trumpet and 4' Clarion greatly complimented the sound of the organ and gave
the organist and congregation a new perspective on the organ music being
played. By 1989, another addition was needed, so Mr. Finch installed a
3 rank mixture. In 1990, the church decided a larger pedal stop was
needed. Mr. Finch happened to be rebuilding an organ that no longer
needed their Bourdon 16', we purchased those pipes and a new windchest so
the larger Bourdon 16' was a success. As time went by, Mr. Finch
continued tuning and maintaining the organ. In 1992, the Dulciana 8'
was revoiced to play louder and tuned to a Celeste for use with the Viola.
By 1995, the presets that were installed by Mr. Greenwood in early 1981 no
longer functioned, so, a multiple memory solid-state combination action
preset was installed. This multiple memory preset has 8 levels and 8
different presets on each level. Mr. Finch continues to do a wonderful
job maintaining the organ in its original condition as much as possible.
For example, before we contracted with Mr. Finch, we were told that the
chimes on the organ were cracked and needed to be totally replaced. At
that time, the cost was around $3,600.00. When we contracted with Mr.
Finch to do our tuning and maintenance, he replaced the felt on the hammers
and adjusted the way it struck the chime. That was all it needed, as
there were only a few that sounded "cracked".
The pipe organ that this one replaced is
still being researched as you read this. Hopefully, information about
that organ is forthcoming.
